VISITING BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT SPECIALIST
(POSITION LOCATED IN OAK BROOK, IL – SUBURB OF CHICAGO)
The Prairie Research Institute (PRI) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is centrally located between Chicago, St. Louis, and Indianapolis. PRI houses 5 large scientific surveys covering a wide range of expertise including biology, water resources, climate, geology, sustainable technology and archaeology.
Our Mission The mission of the Prairie Research Institute is to provide objective, integrated scientific research and service, in cooperation with other academic and research units of the University of Illinois and elsewhere, that allow citizens and decision-makers to make choices that ensure sustainable economic development, enduring environmental quality, and cultural resource preservation for the people, businesses, and governments of Illinois.
Major duties and responsibilities:
Develop a client base with Illinois companies, including the commercial and industrial/manufacturing industry, to evaluate and identify opportunities to improve their sustainability, and to support and document their actual implementation of sustainability activities associated with materials, processes, water and waste water, energy utilization, waste minimization and recycling.
Develop a growth strategy focused on both technical project development and customer satisfaction. Conduct research to identify new markets and customer needs relevant to ISTC's capabilities and expertise. Arrange a minimum of 7-10 business meetings with new clients each week. Plan and prepare presentations for a variety of audiences using a diverse array of mediums. Oversee the development of marketing literature. Build relationships with existing client base in an attempt to increase their current fiscal outlay for ISTC programs. Identify trendsetter ideas, organizations, or technologies by researching industry and related events, publications, and announcements; tracking individual contributors and their accomplishments with the intent to expand ISTCs offered services and capacities. Existing ISTC services within ISTC include, but are not limited to, Governor's Sustainability Awards program; Green Office Challenge; Water Efficiency and Conservation initiative; zero Waste Program; Project management of design, build, operate projects. Create, negotiate, and close commercial agreements. Analyze project metrics and produce required reports. Generate a minimum of $50,000 in contract revenues within the first year of employment, with an expectation to increase by 15% each year after.
Position Requirements and Qualifications:
Required: Bachelor's degree
Preferred: Bachelor's degree in business, economics, or industrial engineering
Required: A minimum of 2 years of selling services in the B2B (business to business) environment. Must have track record of business development and sales of technical services and a demonstrated ability to identify, quantify, and close deals with clients. Candidates should be able to communicate this in their applications through transparent means such as including a deal / sell sheet to validate this capability. This information should include the identification of market, services sold, and volume of deals closed in USD.
Training, Licenses or Certifications - Required: Must possess a valid driver’s license and access to transportation to travel to sites.
Required: Excellent communication skills; ability to work independently and as part of a team; strong public speaking skills and interpersonal skills; excellent computer and data management skills; attention to detail.
Preferred: Track record of business development and sales of sustainability related B2B services; knowledge of current sustainability issues within private sector industrial and manufacturing such as energy efficiency, water consumption, waste reduction, and recycling.
Salary & Benefits: $50,000 to $62,000 per year. Commensurate with experience and education. Generous vacation and sick leave. State Universities Retirement System.
