The Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition (FSHN) at the University of Illinois seeks an outstanding expert in personalized nutrition to fill a full-time 9-month (academic year) tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level. The successful candidate will contribute to the FSHN Department’s core areas of biochemical and molecular nutrition and integrated food, nutrition, and health. The selected candidate is expected to develop an integrated program that addresses fundamental aspects of personalized nutrition - disease prevention and treatment approach that takes into account differences in people’s genome, environment, and lifestyle. The individual will utilize basic science tools and techniques to test hypotheses providing empirical evidence underlying human variability in preferences, requirements, and response to diet.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The successful candidate will establish and maintain an externally funded and independent research program focused on personalized nutrition that promotes health and prevents disease. Focus will be on basic nutrition sciences and preclinical trials. Through collaborations with other faculty, key discoveries will be translated into future tools for consumer assessment allowing for precise, personalized nutritional recommendations. The successful candidate will teach a range of human nutrition, molecular epidemiology or biostatistics courses at the undergraduate and graduate level. This position will involve research, teaching and service obligations.
SYNERGY WITH CAMPUS EXCELLENCE THEMES AND STRENGTHS: This position is aligned with the newly created College of Medicine, Carle Foundation Hospital-University partnership, and the Mayo Clinic Alliance. The successful candidate will be well positioned to collaborate with scientists across campus including the Interdisciplinary Health Sciences Initiative, the Cancer Community @ Illinois, and the Illinois Transdisciplinary Obesity Prevention Program. This individual will have access to scientists and facilities at the Roy J. Carver Biotechnology Center, the Institute of Genomic Biology and the Beckman Institute.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must have an earned doctorate and post-doctoral training in human nutrition or a related discipline, such as biochemistry, molecular epidemiology, or bioengineering. Evidence of professional promise and excellent interpersonal and communication skills are required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: The preferred candidates will provide strong evidence of independent research of a competitive caliber, as evidenced by publications in leading journals in the field, presentations at significant conferences, accolades or awards, fellowships or funding, and strong endorsements by referees of high stature.
SALARY: Competitive salary with benefits and start-up package are commensurate with qualifications.
