Visiting Veterinary Research Specialist

The Department of Pathobiology (vetmed.illinois.edu/path) at the College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is accepting applications for a Visiting Veterinary Research Specialist. This is a full-time, 12-month, non-tenure track position.  Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications. This appointment may become non-visiting at a later date.

The successful candidate will support animal and molecular research in Dr. Christopher Gaulke’s Laboratory.  The candidate will perform Zebrafish husbandry and assist in original microbiome research under the guidance of the principal investigator.  Other duties include recording, analyzing, organizing and presenting experimental results; training new staff and students; preparing and writing manuscripts in collaboration with the principal investigator; and preforms day to day operations including inventory, ordering, regulatory and safety compliance.  Minimum education requirements include a Bachelor of Science Degree in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Fisheries or a related field.  Candidate must have at least six months laboratory experience, experience preforming standard laboratory techniques (e.g., PCR, aseptic technique, etc.), foundational knowledge of statistics, and experience working with model organisms to be considered for this position.  Preferred experience includes at least two years of aquaculture experience. Experience working with zebrafish and mice, practical knowledge of plumbing, command line proficiency, familiarity with one or more scripting languages (e.g., Perl, python, etc.), proficiency in R, experience with immunohistochemistry and confocal imaging, proficient in molecular cloning, experience analyzing microbiome data, experience analyzing large multiomic datasets.
